What is Stuff/Power?

Stuff/Power is a unified scouting metric that measures a player's raw physical dominance and tools, tailored specifically to their role on the field:

  • For Pitchers ("Stuff"): It evaluates the sheer quality of a pitcher's arsenal—including velocity, spin rates, movement, and deception. High-grade "stuff" allows a pitcher to overpower hitters, miss bats, and suppress hard contact.

  • For Hitters ("Power"): It measures a position player's raw power tool—their physical ability to generate high exit velocities, impact the baseball with authority, and drive the ball for extra-base hits.

Both are graded on the traditional 20-80 baseball scouting scale, where 50 is Major League average, 60 is "plus," 70 is "plus-plus," and 80 is elite/top-of-the-scale.

How it is Calculated & Determined:

The Stuff/Power grade is determined contextually based on the player's position and maps directly onto the standard 20-80 scouting scale.

For pitchers, the grade is calculated as a step-function directly tied to their underlying xFIP (Expected Fielding Independent Pitching); an elite xFIP under 3.00 yields a 70 grade, a solid xFIP between 3.50 and 4.50 yields a 60 grade, and an xFIP above 5.50 drops to a 45 grade.

For hitters, the grade reflects scouting assessments of their raw power tool, which serves as a primary driver for advanced run-creation metrics like wRC+ (Weighted Runs Created Plus) and OPS."
